Philadelphia, A mysterious purple cloud appeared in a city in Chile on Sunday, astonishing locals and officials, according to a report by Philadelphia-based news outlet Al Diya. Locals posted pictures on social media platforms such as Twitter showing vibrant purple clouds floating over Pozo Almonte, while the sky is clearly visible. The outlet further said, that the local authorities launched an investigation to understand the incident, which created fear in the community. The cloud cover originated from the Cala Cala mine, which is very close to the city.
Al Diya quoted Tarapaca’s deputy regional director Christian Ibanez as saying: “We are carrying out an inspection process, which shows us that this fact is due to a failure of the booster pump’s motor.”
According to the outlet, environmental officer Emanuele Ibarra said that the failure of the pump caused the iodine to change from a solid to a gaseous state at the plant.
According to Mayo, the mine site is owned by the Saltpetre and Iodine Company (Kosaych).
