North Korea has launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), claiming it was a warning to the US and South Korea, and proof of its capacity for a “fatal nuclear counterattack”. The missile was fired into the sea off Japan’s west coast, hitting its intended target. According to the state news agency KCNA, the launch demonstrates the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s strategic nuclear force’s consistent efforts to turn its capacity of a fatal nuclear counterattack into an irresistible one.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, warned of powerful and overwhelming counteraction against hostile forces. The missile was launched after North Korea threatened an “unprecedentedly persistent, strong” response to the annual military exercises by the US and South Korea. The Hwasong-15 missile was last tested in 2017 and reportedly flew for 1 hour, 6 minutes and 55 seconds, as high as 5,768km (3,584 miles) before accurately hitting a preset area 989km (615 miles) away in open waters.
The missile launch was the first by North Korea since January.
