Actor and comedian Richard Belzer has passed away at the age of 78. The news of his death has sparked tributes from many of his colleagues and friends.
Belzer is best known for his portrayal of Detective John Munch in the TV series “Homicide: Life on the Street” and later in “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” He also appeared in several other TV shows, including “The X-Files,” “30 Rock,” and “Sesame Street.”
Belzer began his career in the 1970s as a stand-up comedian in New York and appeared with comedy legends like Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, and John Belushi on “The National Lampoon Show.” He later went on to host the talk show “Hot Properties.”
One of the most memorable incidents of his career was when he was put in a front chin lock by Hulk Hogan during an appearance on “Hot Properties,” causing him to collapse and hit his head. He sued and won a settlement.
Belzer was also a self-described conspiracy theorist and starred in an HBO comedy special in 1997 titled “Another Lone Nut,” which tackled his experiences surviving testicular cancer.
Following the news of his death, Belzer’s colleagues and friends took to social media to pay tribute to the late actor and comedian. Mariska Hargitay, who worked with him on “Law & Order: SVU,” described him as a dear friend, while Chris Meloni shared a heartfelt behind-the-scenes moment.
Belzer’s death is a loss to the entertainment industry, and his legacy will live on through his contributions to comedy and television.
