Worldsfeed Health Desk: Artificial intelligence (AI) could soon be helping doctors diagnose lung cancer more accurately and efficiently. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and early detection is crucial for improving patients’ chances of survival. Unfortunately, diagnosing lung cancer is often a time-consuming and error-prone process, involving imaging scans, biopsies, and pathologists’ interpretation of tissue samples.
However, a new study published in the journal Nature Medicine suggests that AI could revolutionize lung cancer diagnosis. Researchers from Stanford University used AI algorithms to analyze CT scans of 1,186 patients with lung cancer, and the results were impressive. The AI system correctly identified cancerous nodules with 94.4% accuracy, compared to 93.9% for human radiologists.
The AI system also outperformed human radiologists in identifying benign nodules, with 96.7% accuracy compared to 94.5% for human radiologists. The researchers also found that the AI system was faster than human radiologists, taking an average of 1.2 seconds to analyze a scan, compared to an average of 6 minutes for a human radiologist.
This study is just the latest example of how AI is transforming healthcare. By analyzing large amounts of data and identifying patterns that humans may miss, AI has the potential to make healthcare more efficient, accurate, and accessible. In the case of lung cancer diagnosis, AI could help doctors detect cancerous nodules earlier, improving patients’ chances of survival.
While AI is not yet widely used in clinical practice, this study suggests that it could soon become an essential tool for diagnosing lung cancer. As AI algorithms continue to improve, they may one day be able to diagnose other types of cancer and even predict patients’ responses to different treatments.
