In a significant leap forward, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and backed by Microsoft, has announced that its AI chatbot can now browse the internet in real-time to provide users with up-to-date information. This marks a substantial enhancement to the capabilities of the chatbot, which was initially trained using data only up to September 2021. The move opens doors for premium users to ask ChatGPT questions about current affairs and access the latest news, ultimately expanding to all users in the near future.

ChatGPT and similar AI systems use vast datasets to generate human-like responses to user queries, potentially transforming the way people search for information online. However, until now, the chatbot’s knowledge was “frozen in time,” limited to information available on the internet as of September 2021. It couldn’t provide real-time updates on recent events, leading to user frustration.

The addition of real-time browsing capabilities means that ChatGPT can now serve as a source of the latest news, gossip, and current events, diverting queries that would typically go to search engines or news outlets. However, this newfound capability also raises concerns about the accuracy and reliability of the information provided, as ChatGPT does not always cite its sources.

Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a professor of business psychology at University College London, acknowledges the convenience of obtaining quick responses but warns about the lack of sourcing and potential misinformation. He highlights the need for transparency in sourcing to ensure the information disseminated through ChatGPT is reliable.

OpenAI has faced regulatory scrutiny in the United States due to concerns about ChatGPT generating false information. Earlier this year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requested information from OpenAI on how it addresses risks related to people’s reputations. OpenAI committed to working with the FTC to address these concerns.

The delay in enabling ChatGPT to access real-time information was attributed to several factors, including the time and resources required for developing language models, concerns about introducing inaccuracies with real-time data, and privacy and ethical considerations, particularly regarding copyrighted content.

This development highlights the ongoing challenge in the AI sector: striking a balance between expanding capabilities to be more useful and maintaining safeguards to prevent misuse and the spread of false or harmful information. As AI technology evolves, responsible deployment and addressing ethical concerns become increasingly vital.
